“They’re just saying that to be nice.”
This is still the unstoppable first thought that jumps through my brain every time someone gives me a compliment.
Learning to accept compliments is hard—whether professionally, from a partner, or from strangers. One thing that’s helped me: fixate less on my own perceived shortcomings and focus more on the giver’s kindness.
Them: I loved your show!
Me: My set was alright at best -> I’m happy they had a good time 😀
Them: This work document is fantastic
Me: There’s a million ways it can be improved -> they’re excited for what I made ✨
Them: You’re cute
Me: lol no -> lol they like me 💙
A compliment is a gift, but it requires vulnerability and confidence to receive.
Shifting the focus on accepting and supporting the giver's experience rather than listening to the insecure or critical voices about myself has helped when confidence is in short supply. 💙
